DNP ESSENTIALS

The 2006 AACN DNP Essentials outline the foundational competencies expected of nurses completing a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, these eight Essentials define the core knowledge and skills required for advanced nursing practice across all specialties, including scientific underpinnings of practice, systems leadership, evidence‑based clinical scholarship, the use of information technology, health policy advocacy, interprofessional collaboration, population health, and advanced clinical expertise. 

Together, they serve as the national framework for DNP curriculum design and reflect the role of the DNP as a practice‑focused terminal degree aimed at improving patient and population outcomes. 

DNP Essential I: Scientific Underpinnings for Practice

Integrating nursing science with knowledge from ethics, biophysical, psychosocial, and organizational sciences to improve health.

DNP Essential II: Organizational and Systems Leadership

Developing skills in quality improvement, systems thinking, and accountability to improve patient outcomes.

DNP Essential III: Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods

Utilizing evidence-based practice and analytical methods to evaluate and improve healthcare delivery, 

DNP Essential IV: Information Systems/Technology

Using technology to improve care, analyze data, and transform healthcare systems.

DNP Essential V: Health Care Policy for Advocacy

Engaging in policy development and advocacy to influence health and healthcare.

DNP Essential VI: Interprofessional Collaboration

Leading teams to improve patient and population health outcomes.

DNP Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health

Designing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based initiatives for population health.

DNP Essential VIII: Advanced Nursing Practice

Demonstrating expertise in specialized, advanced nursing care and mentoring (e.g., as a NP, nurse anesthetist, or midwife).
